Once they complete the requirements listed below, permanent residents of Canada, citizens of Canada, and foreign nationals are all able to apply.
Only Canadian institutions are eligible to host Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship recipients who are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents.
The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship is exclusively tenable in Canadian institutions for candidates who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who earned their PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree from an international university.
Candidates who obtained their PhD, PhD equivalent, or health professional degree from a Canadian university and who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents may use their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship in either a Canadian or an international institution.

Candidates must meet or have satisfied all requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree between September 15, 2017, and September 30, 2021 (inclusive), and prior to the start date of their grant, in order to be eligible for the 2020–2021 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program.
Candidates who did not meet all requirements for their degree at the time of application are required to show proof by October 15, 2021.

The eligibility window will apply to the most recent PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree for individuals who have earned several degrees.Candidates who currently hold or have held agency-specific (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) fellowship awards at the postdoctoral level are still eligible to apply to the 2020–2021 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program as long as the funding’s term ends formally on or before September 30, 2021, and before the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship begins. It is not permitted to end the agency-specific postdoctoral fellowship early in order to apply for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program.

Candidates are free to submit applications to both the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program and any other agency-specific postdoctoral fellowship programs at the same time (whether to the same or a different federal granting agency), provided that the research being proposed in each application is in line with the requirements of the federal granting agency. Candidates that place well in both contests must decide which fellowship award they want to accept.
