Candidates for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship may be permanent residents, citizens, or citizens of other countries (Vanier CGS).

To be eligible for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS), an applicant must:

be proposed by just one Canadian university, and the institution nominating the candidate must have obtained a Vanier CGS quota;
You should be starting your first doctorate program (including combined graduate research programs like JD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and MD/PhD, assuming they have a proven and strong research component). Please be advised that only the PhD portion of a dual degree qualifies for the award;Plan to pursue full-time doctoral (or joint graduate research program, such as: JD/PhD, DVM/PhD, MD/PhD) studies and research at the institution that nominated him/her in the summer semester or the academic session that follows the announcement of results; kindly note that for joint graduate research programs, only the PhD part of a joint graduate research program is eligible for the award.
as of May 1, 2021, they have completed no more than twenty (20) months of full-time study for their PhD degree;if registered in a joint graduate research program, such as a JD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or MD/PhD, have completed no more than thirty-two (32) months of full-time study in their doctoral degree program by May 1st, 2021. Candidates who fall into this category have access to the thirty-two (32) month window whether they were previously registered in a Master’s degree program or not.
advanced immediately from a Bachelor’s degree to a PhD (no time spent in a Master’s degree program), having completed no more than thirty-two (32) months of full-time study in their doctorate degree program by May 1, 2021;if they advanced from a Master’s degree program into a doctorate degree program without first earning the Master’s degree, have completed no more than thirty-two (32) months of full-time study in their doctoral degree program by May 1st, 2021.

Program of Study Eligibility
